Random Drug Testing

SYSTOC supports two methods for obtaining a random sample: Random Pools and Random Number Generator. The following topics explain each method.

Before you can begin any type of drug screening, you must set up Test Protocols, Company Programs, Collection Protocols, etc. Most of the setup issues are discussed in Setup - Drug Screening. For information on setting up a Company Drug Program (required for each company for whom you will do testing), see Company Drug Programs.

The Random Pools method uses existing SYSTOC files. For this reason, a clinic must maintain up-to-date employment histories on a company’s entire eligible work force. This information is stored in each employee’s Job History record in the Patient Folder module.

The Random Pools History stores a history of the data used in the selection process each time you randomize a pool to select individuals for drug or alcohol testing. The history preserves details such as employees eligible for selection, employees selected in a sample, and whether the selected individuals were tested. See Random Pools History and Random Pools History Detail.

If Job History records are not current, you can use the Random Number Generator to create a random list. In this method, SYSTOC generates a printout of random numbers based on the pool and sample size. These numbers are then applied to the line numbers of an ordered list of employees (pool members) to determine which ones are selected for testing. See Random Number Generator.

Note: The list of selected employees must be kept confidential! Prior notification would defeat the purpose of random screening.
