Results via the HL7 Drug Test Interface

Results can be imported if your organization has licensed the HL7 Drug Test Interface. Results are updated automatically 24 hours a day as the laboratory completes the tests and returns the results. When a matching record (matching collection date, specimen ID, and laboratory ID) is found, the results are updated in SYSTOC.

See Tracking HL7 Exchange Transmissions for a complete list and explanation of order statuses that you may see for results received from laboratories.

Review Results

The drug test preliminary result and individual substance results are updated when data is received from the laboratory. An order status of HL7 Received means they are ready for review.

You can view an individual's test results by viewing them in their screening record. Result details are updated using the following rules which are the same rules we recommend you follow if you manually update the results.
If a substance result is... the HL7 Drug Test Interface updates...

Note: When the results for all substances in a drug test panel are Negative and you have selected the Drug Test: Close on Negative Results checkbox on Program Preferences > Interface Settings, the drug test record will be marked closed by inserting the results received date in the closed date field. If this option is not checked, you must manually close these tests.

Invalid that substance's entry on the Results screen with an X and the drug test's Preliminary field with an X.
Rejected for Testing that substance's entry on the Results screen with an X and the drug test's Preliminary field with an X.

If the specimen is diluted, the Dilute check box is checked. Creatinine and Specific Gravity values are also updated if provided by the laboratory.

All other information provided by the lab about the results are imported to the drug test's MRO Memo.

Search for Results Received

  • Search for closed drug screen results by running the report Drug Screen Results Letter.
  • Search for open drug screen results by running the report Drug Screen Tracking Report.
  • Search for drugs screens that did not find a match by running the HL7 Drug Screen Results Pending Report.

Review and Resolve Pending Results

When no matching specimen ID, collection date, and laboratory ID are found in drug test results, the files are placed in a holding table in SYSTOC (provided the sending lab includes the SYSTOC site ID for all results).

Include a standard practice of checking the pending results list when looking for drug test results.
  1. Go to Screening Folder > Drug Test
  2. Open the Reports List (F2), select, and run the HL7 Drug Screen Result Pending report.
  3. Use the information contained in the report to add a new drug test record for each unprocessed result.
  4. Click Special in the top menu and select either Retrieve Result or Retrieve All Results.
    • Retrieve Result attempts to find a match in the pending table for the currently open drug test record. A successful match updates the drug test record with the results. An unsuccessful match displays a message such as No Results Found or Missing Data on Drug Test.
    • Retrieve All Results attempts to find a match for all results in the pending table. A message displays when the process is complete. If there are issues with any results, such as missing data, an error message displays. Run the report as many times as necessary to find and resolve issues.
  5. Run the report again to verify all unprocessed results have been resolved.
