Employee Drug and Alcohol Testing Handbook from DOT

[Posted 7/7/05] The Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy Compliance (ODAPC) of the Department of Transportation (DOT) has recently made available a free employee handout regarding the rules and regulations governing DOT drug and alcohol testing. Written in simplified language, it deals with issues of importance to covered employees. Occupational health providers should make clients aware of this free resource and should even consider distributing parts of this handout to those undergoing drug or alcohol tests.

Frequently asked questions answered in this handout include:

  • Who is subject to DOT testing?

  • Why are they tested?

  • What drugs are tested for?

  • When is testing done?

  • Can over the counter medications and prescription drugs still be taken?

  • What behavior with regard to drinking alcohol or taking drugs is prohibited?

  • How are tests administered?

  • How are results interpreted and who interprets them?

  • How can people with substance abuse problems get help?
