Management Programs: Favorable ROI
[Posted 09/16/2008]
A study
published in the September Journal of
Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM)
used the return on investment (ROI) model to
estimate savings from an employee wellness program
focusing on obese employees.
The
researchers followed 890 obese employees who
participated in a worksite health promotion program
called Healthyroads for one year. Results indicate
that 59% of the projected employer savings derived
from reduced healthcare expenditures and 41% from
improved employee productivity—overall, a $1.17 to
$1.00 return on investment.
Employers can use the ROI model used in this study
as a tool to evaluate the financial benefits of
establishing their own health promotion programs.
