OSHA: Resources to Prevent Agricultural Injuries

[Posted 09/04/2008] OSHA maintains an Agricultural Operations website that provides agricultural-related information on applicable regulations, potential hazards, and prevention tips.

Agriculture is statistically one of the most hazardous industries in the US. Agricultural enterprises often involve the whole family, workplace and residence are usually co-located, and work hours are long. Farm workers (adults and youth) are at risk for a wide range of workplace injuries including the following.

  • chronic musculoskeletal problems from repetitive and physically stressful activities

  • noise-induced hearing loss

  • heat stroke

  • equipment accidents

  • exposure to chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides

Although the fatal occupational injury rate is decreasing in the agricultural sector, it still remains significantly higher than the rate for private sector workplaces.
