ADA Amendments Go into Effect January 1, 2009

[Posted 09/26/2008] Now that President Bush has signed the ADA Amendments Act into law, the new regulations will become effective January 1, 2009. The ADA Amendments Act leaves the current definition of “disability” unchanged and clarifies definitions of “substantially limits” and “major live activity.”

These new regulations will, according to Congress, restore the original promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Both the House and Senate passed the ADA Amendments Act unanimously. The original ADA became law in 1990 and represented a wide-range of civil rights legislation prohibiting discrimination based on a citizen’s disability.
