The US
Census Bureau has recently released a comprehensive
document titled Income, Poverty, and Health
Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2007.
For the period 2006-2007, the report indicates that
real median household income has increased, the
poverty rate has shown no statistical difference,
and the number of people without health insurance
decreased.
Regarding health insurance coverage, the Census
Bureau’s data indicate:

The
percentage of people in the US without health
insurance was 15.3% in 2007 (down from 15.8% in
2006).

The
number of uninsured was 45.7 million in 2007 (down
from 47.0 million in 2006).

The
percentage of people covered by private insurance
(predominately employment-based) decreased in 2007
to 67.5 (down from 67.9 in 2006).

The
percentage of people covered by a government plan
increased in 2007 to 27.8 (up from 27.0 in 2006).

Based
on 3-year averages, Texas had the highest rate of
uninsured (24.4%) and several states had “low”
rates: Massachusetts, Hawaii, Minnesota, and
Wisconsin (all within an 8.0-9.0% rate of
uninsured).
