Public-Private Initiatives Needed to Combat Infectious Diseases

[Posted 10/30/2008] The Trust for America’s Health has released a report alerting us of the immediate need to develop ways to fight emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Germs Go Global: Why Emerging Infectious Diseases Are a Threat to America cautions that Americans should not feel that they are safe, that these diseases only affect third-world, poor countries. The report states over 170,000 Americans die each year from such diseases, and, worldwide, they are a major killer of adults and the leading killer of children and adolescents.

Some diseases cited in the report:

  • pandemic flu

  • severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)

  • dengue fever

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

  • hepatitis C

  • HIV/AIDS

  • tuberculosis

  • Salmonella

  • E. coli
