Danger of Hearing Loss from Personal Music Players

[Posted 10/16/2008] Prolonged used of personal music players (e.g., mp3 players) can result in permanent hearing loss according to a study done by a European Union (EU) committee. The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks reported that users listening at high volumes for greater than five hours per week over a five year period are at significant risk for permanent damage. Listening devices with ear-bud type earphones are especially worrisome because they lead to a greater sound exposure than other types of earphones. In fact, maximum-volume settings can be as noisy as aircraft landing and taking off nearby.
