New Influenza Test Can Detect H5N1 Strains

[Posted 10/03/2008] The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a new diagnostic system that can test not only for common human influenza viruses, but also for the deadly H5N1 influenza strains. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) developed the test, which is called the Human Influenza virus Real-Time RT-PCR Detection and Characterization Panel (rRT-PCR Flu Panel). It utilizes a molecular biology technique to test the secretions from a person’s nose or throat.

The FDA has also cleared a diagnostic device called the Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Dx that is used with the rRT-PCR Flu Panel. The panel and diagnostic device will be available to CDC-qualified labs this fall. This diagnostic system can deliver results in about four hours and can test multiple samples simultaneously.
