State Statistics
Now Available on the Increase of Diabetes
[Posted 11/06/2008]
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) analyzed data
from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
(BRFSS) for the periods 1995-1997 and 2005-2007 to
arrive at diabetes incidence rates by state. This
report is the first to provide such state-specific
data.
For the participating states and territories that
had data available for both time periods, the
average, annual age-adjusted incidence of diabetes
increased 90%. Incidence rates are highest in
southern states (27.5%), followed by midwestern
states (26.5%), northeastern states (24.4%), and
western states (23.1%). The report connects obesity
and physical inactivity with the rise of diabetes,
which causes significant human and economic costs.
