Workers at Risk from Baby Milk Powder

[Posted 03/27/2008] A study of employees at a Thai baby milk powder factory concluded that exposure to baby milk powder may increase workers’ risk of breathing problems. A team from the University of Birmingham found that workers with direct exposure to the baby milk powder were twice as likely as office staffers to have symptoms of breathing problems. Dr. Maritta Jaakkola, leader of the study, believes that “…workers with such exposure should be protected as much as possible using exposure control measures…,” but that mothers and babies are safe because they have relatively little exposure to the milk powder.

The study was published in the European Respiratory Journal.
