Shiftworkers
Need 11-16 Hours Off between Shifts
[Posted 06/09/2009]
CIRCADIAN, a London-based provider of fatigue
risk-management systems, is emphasizing the
interrelatedness of health problems, long work hours, sleep
deprivation, and increased stress levels. The firm
contends that overtime hours (mandatory and
voluntary) for shiftworkers are increasing in the
current tough economy in which employers are trying
to get by with fewer people.
CIRCADIAN used a variety of studies published in the
past several years to support its belief that
workers need 11-16 hours off between their work
shifts. There is growing evidence that excessive
long hours directly correlate with health problems,
as a result of the increased stress levels and
chronic sleep deprivation and fatigue.
