Pesticides: Double Risk of Precancerous Blood
Disorder
[Posted 06/22/2009]
The US National Cancer Institute and other research
centers collaborated on a study of agricultural
workers who routinely apply pesticides. The
researchers found the prevalence of a precancerous
blood disorder called MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of
undetermined significance) was twice that of the
general population.
MGUS can lead to the deadly disease multiple
myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone
marrow. The study is featured in the June 18th issue
of the American Society of Hematologys weekly
publication Blood.
