EEOC Revising
Regulations to Conform to Recent ADA Amendments
[Posted 06/23/2009]
The ADA Amendments Act of 2008 countermands the
progressive narrowing of disability law in evidence
over the last several years. In the spirit of
fairness and inclusiveness, the US Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has voted to revise
its regulations to conform to the amendments.
The ADA was originally signed into law in 1990. The
EEOC is responsible for enforcing Title I of this law, which prohibits employment discrimination
against individuals with disabilities.
Quoted in a press release, the EEOC Acting Chairman
Stuart J. Ishimaru stated, “In approving these
proposed regulations, the EEOC today is taking a
significant step toward returning the ADA to the
broad and strong civil rights statute that Congress
originally intended it to be. The proposed
regulations will permit individuals with
disabilities to participate to the fullest extent
possible in the American workplace.”
