Potential Ban on Percocet and Vicodin

[Posted 07/01/2009] The New York Times reports that a federal advisory panel has voted to recommend a ban on two widely used painkillers, Percocet and Vicodin. Both combine a narcotic with acetaminophen and are available by prescription. Chief concern is the use of acetaminophen in high doses over long periods, which is seen as a leading cause of liver damage.

This advisory panel also voted to recommend that the maximum allowable dosage of acetaminophen be reduced in over-the-counter medications in attempt to lessen the public’s risk of liver damage and related ill-effects of the drug when used in large amounts over time.

The Food and Drug Administration will consider these recommendations and offer future rulings.
