New Hope in Fighting XDR-TB

[Posted 02/27/2009] Research by Albert Einstein College of Medicine and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases provides new hope in treating extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB).

A combination of two FDA-approved drugs (clavulanate and meropenem) has been shown to be effective not only in treating TB, but also in inhibiting the growth of 13 XDR-TB strains.

The study was published in the February 27 issue of Science.
