Clinical
Guidelines for Use of Chronic Opioid Therapy
[Posted 02/12/2009]
The American Pain Society has published a systematic
review of the effectiveness of chronic opioid
therapy for chronic noncancer pain in the February
issue of The Journal of Pain.
The American Pain Society and the American Academy
of Pain Medicine sponsored a review of the evidence
and convened a special panel of experts. The
resulting recommendations underscore the need to
understand the serious adverse effects, such as
potential opioid abuse.
Safe and effective chronic opioid therapy for
chronic noncancer pain requires clinical skills and
knowledge in both the principles of opioid
prescribing and on the assessment and management of
risks associated with opioid abuse, addiction, and
diversion.
