In Doubt: Effectiveness of Training With or Without Lifting Equipment for Preventing Back Pain

[Posted 02/14/2008] A study published by the British Medical Journal found that training workers on proper technique and using lifting equipment for the prevention of back pain have little effect in jobs requiring heavy lifting. Primary analysis was based on evidence from randomized trials; secondary analysis used cohort studies.

Training in correct working techniques and fostering the use of lifting equipment are widely seen as reducing the risk of back pain. Many health professionals are involved in providing this training to a diverse group of workers in many industries. However, the effectiveness of these interventions is now in question. Even though there may be other reasons to continue this training, this recent study does not provide evidence that it prevents back pain or any consequent disability.
