Insurance Will Not Remain Free for Obese Workers in Alabama

[Posted 08/27/2008] While some states reward employees who adopt healthy lifestyles, Alabama will become the first state to charge overweight state workers an extra fee for insurance that is otherwise free.

The State Employees’ Insurance Board approved a plan to charge state workers $25 per month for insurance if they are obese and fail to take measures to control their weight by January 2010. The extra fee would apply to any state worker with a body mass index (BMI) of 35% or higher.

The extra fee would also apply to employees who have problems controlling the high risk health factors blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose.

Alabama ranks second in national obesity rankings behind Mississippi.
