Fewer Fatal
Workplace Injuries in 2007
[Posted 08/21/2008]
According to preliminary figures issued by the
Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS),
the number of fatal workplace injuries for 2007 was
6% lower than the previous year’s total (5,488, down
from 5,840). This reduces the US rate to 3.7
injuries per 100,000 workers, the lowest ever
reported by the census.
While
the overall trend is down, certain categories of
fatalities increased. There were 835 fatal falls,
which is a series high for the census. And after
reaching a record low of 540 in 2006, workplace
homicides increased by 13% to a total of 610 for
2007. That figure is still significantly lower than
the series high of 1,080 reached in 1994.
