Better Screening Needed to Reduce MRSA Transmission

[Posted 04/24/2008] Researchers who reviewed data from 169 studies of 33,318 healthcare workers in 37 countries found that 4.6% of the workers carried methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and of these, 5.1% had clinical MRSA infections. They further found 18 studies with proven and 26 studies with likely transmission of MRSA to patients from (healthcare workers) who were not clinically infected with MRSA. These findings suggest that more aggressive screening of healthcare workers is required to help reduce infection rates. The review is expected to be published in the May issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
