EPA Issues New Rule on Lead-Safe Practices for Contractors

[Posted 04/04/2008] Beginning in April 2010, contractors who renovate older buildings where children and pregnant women could be exposed to lead dust will be required to follow special safety standards to minimize lead contamination. The new rules require contractors and maintenance professionals who work on homes, apartment buildings, childcare facilities, and schools built before 1978 to be trained and certified in lead-safe work practices.

While there has been a dramatic decrease over the last two decades in the number of children affected by lead-poisoning, EPA is continuing its efforts to take on this preventable disease, said James Gulliford, EPAs Assistant Administrator for Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances.
