Final Rule on EHR Incentive Program

[Posted 7/14/10] The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and HHS have issued the final rule for implementation of the provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This rule specifies how to qualify for an incentive payment. The agencies backed away from requiring that all criteria must be met to qualify for the payments. Instead, the majority of core objectives are mandatory, but doctors and hospitals can choose five additional criteria from a ten–item menu.

In addition, the rules have been relaxed to require only medication order entry systems in the first stage.
