HealthDay News: Professional Painters at Higher Risk for Bladder Cancer
[Posted 7/22/10] A review of almost 3,000 bladder cancer cases reported in 41 previous studies led researchers to conclude that painters are 30% more likely to develop that disease than the general population. Painters with more than 10 years of experience were found to be more likely to develop the bladder cancer than those who worked fewer years. And there was some evidence that female painters were more susceptible than their male counterparts.
The report was published online on July 20 in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. According to the researchers, "Because several million people are employed as painters worldwide, even a modest increase in the relative risk is remarkable." It is not known what chemical(s) in paint may be responsible for the increased risk.
